Suzy Condrad aka She Robot has debuted her brand-new EP 7 Bells and Miro Magazine’s Madeline Royle says; “She Robot has successfully honed and established a distinctive personal sound and style which is prominent and inimitable in the genre of electronica.”
The EP 7 Bells was produced by Mike Bennett, who has worked with the likes of Ian Brown, The Fall and Toyah Wilcox, and was released on Northern Quarter Records last month.
Recorded in her Bristol basement, the four-track EP cannot easily be pigeonholed into one genre. The songs are poetic and well-written throughout, with each one drawing from different genres of music.
The leading track, 7 Bells throws you in at the deep end with strong electronic beats, sonic synths and an air of dystopia. Suzy has a hypnotic tone to her voice that her music blends with effortlessly
Breakdown is classic 80’s upbeat bop and a definite dance-floor must have. The technical reverberations are created using a looping system using combining electronic sounds with musical instruments and anything she can get her hands on –she uses keyboards, beat-boxes and even glass bottles. This track exhibits her passion for inventing new and innovative sounds. She describes herself as a ‘one-woman band for the 21st century,’
This rising DIY artist has been described as ‘one to watch’ by Louder Than War. She Robot began busking on the streets of Camden to performing her distinctive live act at venues and festivals across the UK. Condrad has already self-released two albums, She of Little Faith and Street Repeat.
We Never Broke the Window is stripped back compared to her other tracks. Condrad pairs her signature electronica with raw whistling. The song has a fairy-tale atmosphere to it with her warm, gentle vocals. The song introduces stronger drum beats and sonic wails taking Suzy back to her signature electronica style.
The final song on the EP, Don’t Look Down blends synth-pop sounds behind Condrad’s smooth, ethereal voice. This track is an easy listen, tranquil and a solid end to this eclectic EP.
Suzy Condrad chose the name She Robot to reflect her suspicions that ‘artificial intelligence will relatively soon take over the world*,’ that is if she doesn’t get there first.
