The Grenaways could be said to be mining the rich veins of inspirational ore that course through their home turf, adding a sense of their own ties to the region and especially it’s Celtic heritage. But, they are a band set for far wider horizons than just Cornwall with a massive and alternative sound billowing through their musical sails…
They are rootsy storytellers, unique in the folk style, with songs that are rich in nautical undertones, influenced so much by the sea, the people and coastal living.
Joff Phipps (guitar), Kris Lannen (lead vocals and guitar) Isabelle Roberts (Violin)
Henry Cavender (drums) Laura Garcia (lead vocals, flute and piano) Tom Fosten (bass)
Claude Lamon (trumpet)
In the last year The Grenaways have played some of Cornwall’s biggest festival stages alongside the likes of, The Fisherman’s Friends, Fairport Convention, 3 Daft Monkeys, Stereo MC’s and the Happy Mondays.
But, remaining true to their heart you will often find them playing in cafes, bars and folk clubs, with their sound and songs stripped back to how they were originally written…a guitar, a voice and a view of the ocean…
They signed to Dare2B Records in 2013 and recorded their debut album, ‘Be Still Young Heart’, using a mobile studio at St James Church in St Kew, completing it at The Foundry in Sheffield. It was released in the summer of 2014.
Simon Holland – Folk Radio UK: “The south west tip of England has also been a lure for artists and creative sorts, inspired by the rugged beauty and comparative tranquility, which naturally comes with being at the end of the line. Metaphorically as well as keeping close to the elements of salt air and sea spray, The Grenaways could be said to be mining the rich veins of inspirational ore that course through their home turf, adding a sense of their own ties to the region and especially it’s Celtic heritage. Be Still Young Heart is a record that brims with a spirituality, but one that has more in keeping with Gaelic language songs, filled with passion, feeling and suggestion, rather than offering a moral A-Z roadmap of how to live your life.”
Urban Kelt: “There’s a lot of love in this album. Not only is the production excellent but it is simply an immaculate collection of songs. We at UrbanKelt are hooked! For the Grenaways, the only way is up.”
Rapture Magazine: “Now that we’re into the summer holiday season, the great Cornish coast is again at risk of reaching our yearly sunburnt-holidaymaker quota, each vying to find the most tranquil destination but still prepared to share it with half of the country. It’s a frustrating period for the natives, where the price of admission overrules tradition, and heritage is buried under a pile of plastic windmills and crab lines, but that makes a release like The Grenaways’ debut Be Still Young Heart – one that lives and breathes Cornwall – that much more vital.”
