Friday 25 April

JONNY VELON + SchoolBoy's Death Trio

JONNY VELON: Bristol sych-rockers with touches of transcendent as well as groove rock n roll. Think Transformer-era Lou Reed meets Pink Floyd or Jeff Buckley, John Legend and rolled into one. They are a unique sounding and exciting new band, with a growing fanbase.

'Psychedelic rock'n'roll with infectious harmonies and towering structures and a proper pop sensibility. We think McCartney meets Costello on acid. Jonny Velon fronts this full band of sharp players, a show not to be missed' Kit McKenzie

SCHOOLBOY’S DEATH TRIO: Tough hip-hop beats, dirty fuzz bass, and a front man simultaneously pushing ferocious saxophone and punk rap poetry.

Formed in 2013 from members of the Bristol scene who’ve worked previously with established local acts; notably Sian Evans (Kosheen), and Dehvan Othieno (Talisman), the band is young but experienced.

The live show combines music with visuals, art, costume and special guests to put on a proper performance.

'Shit it all makes sense now!!!! SCHOOLBOY’S DEATH TRIO! F***ing amazing!!!!!!

BANDS WE LIKE: Acoustic Ladyland, Gil Scott Heron, Public Enemy, Living Colour, Rage Against The Machine, John Cooper Clarke, Ian Dury, Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip, Burning Spear, Tortoise, Sun Ra, Gary Bartz, Pharoah Sanders.

The DEAD ROMANTICS

Hard-core rockers The Dead Romantics, a new band on the scene with this only being their fourth live show but from watching their live set and hearing their sound, it was very hard to believe so. Crashing drumming sounds, wild guitar riffs and insane killer solos, their sound was incredible and similar to likes of Jimmy Eat World and Alkaline Trio.

An American punk rock feel to their set and the guys were having a bit of banter on stage as well, everyone in all good spirits and that’s what it is all about – shout outs to their guitarist as well on his insane solos during the performance, quick and clever movement and sharp strums really added quality to the sound. Overall was very impressed!

Mustafa Mirreh THE FLUX Jan 2014

DIAMONBACK KISS: Young five piece rock band from Bristol who have started to build a reputation for their unique take on modern rock music. THE ROCKINGBIRDS

The Rockingbirds released their self-titled debut in 1992 on Heavenly Recordings. A much loved and acclaimed record and one which in equal parts bucked the musical trends of the time and anticipated the alt-country movement which was to follow. Their beautifully written, heart-felt songs resulted in the North London band being talked of in the same breath as the likes of Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks.

They would release a second album, Whatever Happened To The Rockingbirds? in 1995 before imploding and heading off in their separate directions.

Returning, phoenix-like in 2008 to play Heavenlyfs 18th birthday celebrations at the South Bank in London, they would play further shows in 2009 to support the re-release of a re-mastered and expanded version of their debut album.

Since 2009 they have been writing, recording and playing intermittently, and in December 2011 released a 7h, Till Something Better Comes Along, on Spring Records, a track which opens up the forthcoming album.

The Rockingbirds released of a new album. The Return Of The Rockingbirds, their first album in 17 years, which was released through Loose Music to rave reviews!

'head and shoulders above any UK country record released so far this century. Believe it ' - R2 MAGAZINE.

'They've never sounded better' - Q

'showcases why the band deserve to be considered alongside The Jayhawks and Whiskeytown as the finest exponents of their whiskey-tinged craft' - RECORD COLLECTOR

Friday 16 May

KIRRISS RIVIERE BLUES BAND + Likely Culprits

KIRRIS RIVIERE: Electrifing underground blues band described as authentic as tennessee whiskey by the Venue Magazine.

Front man Kirris Riviere is influenced by greats like Muddy Waters, BB King, to name but a few....also on guitar Rob Crooks who's brings a good rock,n,roll vibe through his playing but can also scream the blues when he wants to, Brian Jones on the bass who brings a funky constantly on tempo vibe with him and can also get low down and dirty.

LIKELY CULPRITS:

Charlie Rose on keys the one and only, bringing a touch of soul a touch of boogie woogie and a whole heap of blues with him. Andy Norman on drum's is the cherry on top of the blues pie. Getcha blues on people.

NANCY + Triphazard (from Liverpool) + The Divided Circle + Nightcall

NANCY:Original Electro/Dancefloor Pop-Sounds gauging elements of Goldfrapp and Lady Gaga and soon to release her debut single.

So far Nancy has supported Tinchy Stryder, The Hoosiers & will be playing other major events this year.

To sum Nancy up, she is a creative, charismatic, spellbinding performer with sex appeal and attitude. Her songs are catchy, the show is hot.

Nancy is a star and should definitely not to be missed!

TRIPHAZARD:Three piece from Liverpool, UK. Triphazard quickly begin knocking down boundries between electronic and rock music, to create a sound reminiscent of the New Wave bands of the time such as Klaxons and New Young Pony Club.

After bagging support slots with the likes of Bastille, Franz Ferdinand, Oasis and Alphabeat, Triphazard became a massive name in the north-west scene, and where shortly nominated for MTV Unsigned Sound of 2013. Triphazard are set for a year of International touring and promotion!

THE DIVIDED CIRCLE: 'A near perfect blend of indie romanticism and lush electronica… full of imaginative guitar work, big room synths and the compelling interplay of Jon Rees and Krystian Taylor’s contrasting voices.'

'Sounds like Depeche Mode, re-imagined by Brian Eno, after five years immersed in the sound system techno of Basic Channel.' - Venue Magazine

Known of course for his work with the Blockheads, some of Norman’s most celebrated works include bass lines on ‘The Magnificent Seven’ by The Clash and ‘Relax’ by Frankie. Norman has also played shows with Nick Cave and he regularly performs with Wilko Johnson and. The wide-ranging live set for this tour, based on the album, reflects his broad musical tastes from Blockheads style funk to rock, virtuoso jazz fusion, bebop, pop, r&b and dance.

'Faith and Grace' ranges from a reworked Ian Dury track ‘Billericay Dickie’, to a new version of Wilko Johnson’s ‘Roxette’ (which Wilko performs on), to Jazz-tinged instrumentals. This is a masterclass in bass, but also a great listen. ‘Billericay Dickie’ opens the album and is followed by a recording of Dury introducing Norman at the last ever show they did at the Palladium; this is where the album title comes from, “Faith and Grace” being rhyming slang for Bass. ‘Papa-chu-pap’ also features a sample of Dury and is in fact a kind of collage of samples taken from live shows.

Norman’s live band features fellow Blockhead and hugely respected sax player Gilad Atzmon (‘hardest gigging man in British jazz’), guitarist Mike Outram (‘World-class’ The Guardian), keyboard virtuoso Frank Harrison and the astounding jazz-rock drum supremo Asaf Sirkis. Other surprise guests may drop in at any time! “Faith & Grace” has received a great welcome from the music press and fans alike and this tour will see Norman doing what he does best, strutting his stuff live. Unmissable!

THE RAVONS: Bristol based band who mix delta blues with the urgency of the new wave sound of Stiff Records at their peak!

DIESEL PARK WEST

DPW were blood and thunder poets of rock’s mercurial terrains in the late 1980`s and early 1990`s. Their best songs were potent charges directed at the spiritual decay and confusion of the times. An English U2, they became a favourite critical reference point, but the seams they mined were deeper in rock’s rich strata. They studied and effortlessly recast the vibrant purity of Creedence, the sonic alchemy of the Byrds, the raw nerved melodic toughness of The Beatles and the cathartic thrust of The Stones.

Upon signing to the EMI subsidiary Food Records, the quintet debuted with the earth-shattering single 'When the Hoodoo Comes; a solid year of touring and songwriting followed, as they issued a series of subsequent singles and gained a massive and loyal following -- including 'Jackie's Still Sad,' All the Myths on Sunday,' and 'Like Princes Do' -- before finally releasing their first LP, Shakespeare, Alabama, in 1989.

They recieved great critical notices, their singles and albums reached the charts and DPW were acclaimed for their live performancies. This will be their debut at the thunderbolt and we cant wait!

JOHN OTWAY and WILD WILLY BARRETT

The pair first achieved notoriety with an eye-watering performance on Old Grey Whistle Test and subsequent hit single Really Free in 1977.

Otway's heady mix of blind ambition and rank incompetence was to keep this microstar shining for almost two decades despite his ability to turn any situation to his own disadvantage. His autobiography Rock and Roll's Greatest Failure out sold, by a factor of ten, all the records he had released since his hit.

Wild Willy Barrett is one of the most accomplished multi-instrumentalists working today, playing acoustic classical guitar with an original style and virtuosity few could match. His musical style is witty and his humour onstage is dry.

MILES HUNT & ERICA NOCKALLS

(The Wonder Stuff)

+ Dirty Ray (Immaculate Fools)

Over the past 20 years The Wonder Stuff have notched up 5 top 20 albums and played to hundreds of thousands of people throughout the UK. Best known for their number 1 single with Vic Reeves, Dizzy, the band have performed hundreds of TV shows with their 17 top 20 singles and made 2,000,000 sales worldwide. Having played 7 festivals and 2 UK tours in 2006 founder-member and lead vocalist, Miles Hunt, and fiddle player Erica Nockalls have recorded the incredible album `Not An Exit` which has been heralded as Milesfinest work.

Erica brings a new dimension to the set, playing fiddle on classic Wonder Stuff songs as well as on songs that have never featured fiddles before. The strings throughout the entire set show the more roots/folk side of The Wonder Stuffs songs.

By way of introducing each song in the set, Miles recounts stories of life on the road, tales from The Wonder Stuff and life in general. It's a double dose of Miles; the singer-songwriter and monologue-ist!

DIRTY RAY: Former Immaculate Fools Frontman Kevin Weatherill plays gritty blues. Influenced by John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Tom Waits, and Nick Cave, Weatherill released his debut album `Primitive` erlier this year.
