THUNDERFEST 2014:

THIS IS THE KIT + I Am Horse

This Is The Kit is the musical project of Kate Stables. You thought you didn’t like the banjo but you were wrong pal. Listen as Kate rips forward with her hypnotic twang pattern and a voice of rare, unaffected beauty.

“absolutely georgeous, like an aural bath with the warm water lapping over you” – Cerys Matthew, BBC 6 music

“just one of the best things i’ve heard all year, the rest of the lp’s pretty good too….wonderful wonderful stuff” – Guy Garvey, BBC 6 music

I AM HORSE: Bristol based 3-piece Their sound is diverse, with pop song structures juxtaposed with unexpected arrangements and instrumentation, which alongside Magda Conways’ vocals leaves a haunting and beguiling impression.

‘Then Let Me Go’ was released in March 2013 alongside an acoustic BBC Introducing in the West Session. The album, recorded throughout 2012 at Bristol’s Toybox Studios, reflects I Am Horse’s eclectic sound, with tracks ranging from the string swirling ‘To Weston’, through to the electronic driven ‘Fade Away’.

'Wonderful electronica with a pure, pure sound' Bethan Elfyn, Amazing Radio.

I Am Horse are wonderfully weird, or is it weirdly wonderful” BBC introducing in the West.

THUNDERFEST 2014:

THE RUPEES

+ Beat Harlows + Painted Faces + Tonic For Tigers

THE RUPEES:Ambitious 5 piece Rock n' Roll band who have established themselves on the Bristol music scene. Influenced by the sounds of The Doors, The Black Keys and Kasabian, they have headlined many well known venues across the city with our upbeat brand of Rock n' Roll music, venues such as The Fleece, The Exchange, The Louisiana and Thekla, whilst also supporting national touring bands such as The Growlers, The Ramona Flowers, Wampire and The Spasmodics.

The band recently released our debut EP to positive reviews and widespread attention, with it achieving over 2500 plays in two weeks on our Soundcloud and Youtube pages.

BEAT HARLOWS:A bittersweet indie-ish 5 piece with an authentic unpredictability. A Wailing 60's organ blends with sweet and tender guitar parts, backed up by a pounding manic rhythm section. Soaring falsetto backing vocals intertwine with a broken baritone lead. The vocals dip in and out of shyness and genuine frustration, sarcasm and ecstacy.

Balancing well in the light between garage rock and sweetly crafted songs, they have only been together under a year, but are gaining a reputation rapidly.

PAINTED FACES:Recently formed band from Bristol who use their solid alternative/post-punk influences as the driving force for their unique sound. It was written in the stones that the band members fused together their wide range of music tastes to create a whole new experience and flavour, which the prophecy foretold it was to practically change the face of music forever.

TONIC FOR TIGERS: Acoustic set from Bristol based melodic indie pop-rock merchants with an original sound that conjures up The Strokes and MGMT

THUNDERFEST 2014: SPOCTET + Film 7

The 7 members of Spoctet had a total blast at Glastonbury 2014's Bandstand stage, where their Far-Out-East-West -soundtrack-jazz was devoured by the mud encrusted hoards.

'There's bits that sound North African with darabhuka drumming and Eastern harmonies while other pieces can sound like Chico Hamilton in the Fifties or even Spanish. Someone said it all sounded really English… When it all comes together it sounds fantastic!

They've just been to Exmoor and recorded some tunes with the bats, bees and woodland trees. Wrap your ears round them at:-

Support tonight will be from Film7, playing soundtracks and small vinyl.

There MAY also be some Shetland folk music.....

THUNDERFEST 2014

SHE MAKES WAR

She Makes War is the solo project of Bristol based multi-instrumentalist, visual artist and digital polymath Laura Kidd, whose independent albums `Disarm` and `Little Battles have gained her an ardent international following over the last three years.

Using the language of combat to show that love is a battlefield, She Makes War's music is about collision - analogue with digital, war with peace and technology with the natural world. Driven by Kidd’s bewitching, pastoral vocals and layered guitars and supported by a plethora of additional instruments from ukulele to autoharp, melodica, piano, violin, harp, saxophone and three part recorder ensemble, She Makes War's songs are punctuated by a patchwork of field recordings from her global travels as hired gun for the likes of Tricky, The Penelopes and The Young Punx.

She Makes War has been making waves with her atmospheric solo gigs on Telecaster, ukulele, megaphone and loop pedal and with full band shows featuring her supergroup The Olympians. Her quarterly Breakfast With Apollo community and collaboration nights in London and Bristol and impending launch of digital DIY collection My Big Sister aim to support, ignite and inspire.

Blending urgent, grungey guitars with processed beats, heady pop melodies and a liberal dusting of glitter, She Makes War has drawn comparisons to artists from Blur to Bat For Lashes, Throwing Muses, Bauhaus, Belly, Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins.

BURNING MEMORIES + FIRES Double EP Launch + Dead Romantics + Goodbye The Sunset

BURNING MEMORIES: Ex Holding Tides guitarist Annie ''Livewire'' Kelleher`s new powerhouse rock trio. Ignition play mix Foo Fighters style drive with Feeder like gutsy vibro rock, paying homage to Funeral for a Friend`s collective vocal spirit. Theres nothing naff about these kids, expect great riffs, expertly crafted rockin` nuggets packed with insistent verses and tub-thumping choruses. The debut EP is all of this and more, it will knock you down dead!

FIRES: Bustling Bristol four piece are making waves! They’ve spent their time fine tuning their sound – a strong presence of modern blues rock in the guitar and bass, fill heavy, driving drum beats overlaid with the pure, catchy vocal melodies from front-woman Sophie Hawes. All together the band blends together Blues-rock with a hint of Noise rock to create their unique sound, as well as boasting an extremely energetic and enjoyable live performance.

FIRES are gaining fans and respect throughout Bristol and intend to take themselves beyond.Tonight they will be promoting their debut EP so check the out and buy it while you can!

‘‘Blues-meets-sinister guitar style'' The Venue Magazine 2014 ''well crafted noisy garage rock'' - Bristol Live Magazine 2014

DEAD ROMANTICS:Hard-core rockers The Dead Romantics, a new band on the scene with this only being their fourth live show but from watching their live set and hearing their sound, it was very hard to believe so. Crashing drumming sounds, wild guitar riffs and insane killer solos, their sound was incredible and similar to likes of Jimmy Eat World and Alkaline Trio.

An American punk rock feel to their set and the guys were having a bit of banter on stage as well, everyone in all good spirits and that’s what it is all about – shout outs to their guitarist as well on his insane solos during the performance, quick and clever movement and sharp strums really added quality to the sound. Overall was very impressed!

Mustafa Mirreh THE FLUX Jan 2014

Friday 12 September

NORMAN WATT-ROY BAND + The Ravons + The Lonely Tourist

Norman Watt-Roy delighted to announce that he will undertake a a second UK tour in support of his first ever solo album `Faith and Grace` released through Cadiz Music. Known of course for his work with the Blockheads, some of Norman’s most celebrated works include bass lines on ‘The Magnificent Seven’ by The Clash and ‘Relax’ by Frankie. Norman has also played shows with Nick Cave and he regularly performs with Wilko Johnson and. The wide-ranging live set for this tour, based on the album, reflects his broad musical tastes from Blockheads style funk to rock, virtuoso jazz fusion, bebop, pop, r&b and dance.

'Faith and Grace' ranges from a reworked Ian Dury track ‘Billericay Dickie’, to a new version of Wilko Johnson’s ‘Roxette’ (which Wilko performs on), to Jazz-tinged instrumentals. This is a masterclass in bass, but also a great listen. ‘Billericay Dickie’ opens the album and is followed by a recording of Dury introducing Norman at the last ever show they did at the Palladium; this is where the album title comes from, “Faith and Grace” being rhyming slang for Bass. ‘Papa-chu-pap’ also features a sample of Dury and is in fact a kind of collage of samples taken from live shows.

Norman’s live band features fellow Blockhead and hugely respected sax player Gilad Atzmon (‘hardest gigging man in British jazz’), guitarist Mike Outram (‘World-class’ The Guardian), keyboard virtuoso Frank Harrison and the astounding jazz-rock drum supremo Asaf Sirkis. Other surprise guests may drop in at any time! “Faith & Grace” has received a great welcome from the music press and fans alike and this tour will see Norman doing what he does best, strutting his stuff live. Unmissable!

SAM EVANS BAND + Small Talk Robot

With crowd pleasing performances Sam Evans and the band play an incredible jazzy, urban vibe that you just have to dance to. Almost impossible to categorise this young, upcoming group perform a remarkable range of unique, 'one off' compositions that get the crowd on their feet as they engage with the great sound from the stage.

Playing acoustic guitar Sam’s vocal style consists of blended soul, funk and reggae creating something reminiscent of Ed Sheeran but kept interesting with incredibly quirky vocal acrobatics that have to be heard to be believed. The lyrical complexity of Sam’s work make for an intriguingly different sound experience and has a rare quality only fully experienced by hearing it played 'live and loud' as he and the band do what they love to do – perform!

WE WILL HAVE VICTORY + Diamondback Kiss + Rumbling Hoof

WE WILL HAVE VICTORY:Hailing from Bristol UK, We Will Have Victory are the last word in music for a generation craving revolution from sanitised, soulless, lifeless rock. W.W.H.V play a twisted mix of metal and Alt rock paying homage to Muse and Placebo along the way. The songwriting reflects this, tracks such as ‘Heretics In Vietnam’ and ‘Kids With Knives’ are charged with brutal energy, huge hooks and power - dynamics are key, energy is everything making them a huge pull on the bristol gigging circuit.

DIAMONDBACK KISS are a young five piece rock band from Bristol who have started to build a reputation for their unique take on modern rock music. A stream of self penned songs make up the mainstay of their live performances these are interspersed with some well chosen covers, that have influenced the band's sound and style, this makes them a prospect not to be missed.

RUMBLING HOOF are the world's leading purveyors of Agricultural Metal (made near farms). Think Motorhead meets The Almighty meets The Wildhearts on a day when you can't stop smiling. Its metal like they used to make in the good old days. Chaos you can hum.

DIESEL PARK WEST

DPW were blood and thunder poets of rock’s mercurial terrains in the late 1980`s and early 1990`s. Their best songs were potent charges directed at the spiritual decay and confusion of the times. An English U2, they became a favourite critical reference point, but the seams they mined were deeper in rock’s rich strata. They studied and effortlessly recast the vibrant purity of Creedence, the sonic alchemy of the Byrds, the raw nerved melodic toughness of The Beatles and the cathartic thrust of The Stones.

Upon signing to the EMI subsidiary Food Records, the quintet debuted with the earth-shattering single 'When the Hoodoo Comes; a solid year of touring and songwriting followed, as they issued a series of subsequent singles and gained a massive and loyal following -- including 'Jackie's Still Sad,' All the Myths on Sunday,' and 'Like Princes Do' -- before finally releasing their first LP, Shakespeare, Alabama, in 1989.

They recieved great critical notices, their singles and albums reached the charts and DPW were acclaimed for their live performancies. This will be their debut at the thunderbolt and we cant wait!

Four musicians got together and decided they wanted to create something new, each had a different musical background and influence, these influences from genres like grunge, classic rock, progressive, funk, jazz, metal and punk were put together to create new music with raunchy riffs, driving and dynamic rhythms, and something, well, just plain different.. songs that might just be enough to fill the 'Void' in radio playlists.. and indeed; the world.

JOHN OTWAY and WILD WILLY BARRETT

The pair first achieved notoriety with an eye-watering performance on Old Grey Whistle Test and subsequent hit single Really Free in 1977.

Otway's heady mix of blind ambition and rank incompetence was to keep this microstar shining for almost two decades despite his ability to turn any situation to his own disadvantage. His autobiography Rock and Roll's Greatest Failure out sold, by a factor of ten, all the records he had released since his hit.

Wild Willy Barrett is one of the most accomplished multi-instrumentalists working today, playing acoustic classical guitar with an original style and virtuosity few could match. His musical style is witty and his humour onstage is dry.

heggley

Friday 17 October

JOHN HEGLEY + Diego Brown and the Good Fairy

Mr Hegley was born in Newington Green, North London, and was educated in Luton, Bristol and Bradford University.

His first public performance monies came from busking his songs, initially outside a shoeshop in Hull, in the late Seventies. He performed on the streets of London in the early Eighties, fronting the Popticians, with whom he also recorded two sessions for John Peel, and has since been a frequent performer of his words, sung and spoken, on both local and national radio.

He has produced ten books of verse and prose pieces, two CDs and one mug, but his largest source of income is from stages on his native island. An Edinburgh Festival regular, he is noted for his exploration of such diverse topics as dog hair, potatoes, handkerchieves and the misery of human existence.

He is an occasional DJ, dancer and workshop leader, using drawing, poetry and gesture. He has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Arts from what is now the University of Bedfordshire, and once performed in a women's prison in Columbia.

DIEGO BROWN AND THE GOOD FAIRY:Part low-fat milk. Our musical education started at the age of about 7 at the knee of a second cousin who later changed the course of Anglo-Latin American relations. And we never looked back.

Some say we’re like the Carpenters on a lost weekend in Twin Peaks.Someone once said we’re the most surreal musical experience since the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.

One writer said we were the talk of the chip van queue at Sidmouth international festival. If you want the facts, try these: guitar, banjo, ukelele, drum, accordion, fiddles, swannee, kazoos, cymbal, shakers, drawings, cake, prizes, fuzzboxes.

MILES HUNT & ERICA NOCKALLS

(The Wonder Stuff)

+ Dirty Ray (Immaculate Fools)

Over the past 20 years The Wonder Stuff have notched up 5 top 20 albums and played to hundreds of thousands of people throughout the UK. Best known for their number 1 single with Vic Reeves, Dizzy, the band have performed hundreds of TV shows with their 17 top 20 singles and made 2,000,000 sales worldwide. Having played 7 festivals and 2 UK tours in 2006 founder-member and lead vocalist, Miles Hunt, and fiddle player Erica Nockalls have recorded the incredible album `Not An Exit` which has been heralded as Milesfinest work.

Erica brings a new dimension to the set, playing fiddle on classic Wonder Stuff songs as well as on songs that have never featured fiddles before. The strings throughout the entire set show the more roots/folk side of The Wonder Stuffs songs.

By way of introducing each song in the set, Miles recounts stories of life on the road, tales from The Wonder Stuff and life in general. It's a double dose of Miles; the singer-songwriter and monologue-ist!

DIRTY RAY: Former Immaculate Fools Frontman Kevin Weatherill plays gritty blues. Influenced by John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Tom Waits, and Nick Cave, Weatherill released his debut album `Primitive` erlier this year.

ANDY FAIRWEATHER LOW and the Low Riders

ZONE-O-TONE UK TOUR 2014:Andy Fairweather Low’s pedigree is the stuff rock dreams are made of. He first came to prominence at the vanguard of the new youthful expression of music as the lead singer in Amen Corner. The 60s saw them clock up hit after pop hit. Songs such as 'Bend Me Shape Me', 'Hello Suzy', '( If Paradise is ) Half As Nice' are internationally remembered to this day. But if you were paying close attention you might have picked up a clue in the magnificent ‘Gin House’ to Andy’s future musical collaborations.

Since the early days Andy has gone on to work with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, David Crosby, The Band, Elton John, Roger Waters, Richard and Linda Thompson, Dave Gilmour, The Who, BB King, Joe Cocker, Steve Winwood, Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn, Jimmy Page, Ronnie Lane, Linda Ronstadt, Roddy Frame, Emmylou Harris, Joe Satriani, the Bee Gees, Jeff Beck, The Impressions, Lonnie Donegan, Ringo Starr, Steve Gadd, David Sanborn, Benmont Tench, Warren Zevon, Charlie Watts, Mary J. Blige, Dave Edmunds, Georgie Fame, Bonnie Raitt, Otis Rush, Phil Collins, Van Morrison, Gerry Rafferty, Chris Rea, Buddy Guy, Chris Barber, Jackson Browne, Bill Wyman, Sheryl Crow, Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown, Pete Townshend... and hundreds more.

Now following a solo path, his first solo album in 24 years Sweet Soulful Music was released late in 2007 followed by The Very Best Of Andy Fairweather Low which was released in the UK in June 2008 and the Live DVD followed hot on it’s heels.

A world tour as musical director with Roger Waters band then a European tour with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings might be difficult to top for most people - but not for Andy Fairweather Low who just segued smoothly into a major solo tour last summer with some of the world’s finest musicians in his band. Following an acclaimed UK Tour in Autumn 2012 Andy completed a third tour with The Low Riders in Germany.

2013 saw Andy & The band opening the shows on Eric’s European tour headline The Americana Festival and complete their first tour in Japan with 8 shows in Tokyo. Their UK Autumn 2013 tour in support of the Zone O Tone was so well received that further early Spring dates in 2014 were added in the UK and Germany and 2014 started with the band on Bob Harris’ rock show playing in session and, when they came back from Germany before picking up their UK tour leg, they appeared for two nights as guests in an all star cast celebrating Albert Lee’s 70th birthday at The Cadogan Hall, London where they were also enlisted as the house band for a number of household names.

Andy and bassist Dave Bronze then picked up touring again as members of Eric Clapton’s band and for good measure Andy took part, playing guitar, in a special all star re-recording for Radio 2 of Rock Around The Clock for a series celebrating the Birth Of Rock & Roll which was broadcast in May this year.

Andy Fairweather Low – Guitar & Vocals, Dave Bronze – Bass & Vocals, Paul Beavis – Drums, Nick Pentelow – Sax & Clarinet.

lurkers

Friday 31 October

THE LURKERS + Viva Le Punk

Inspired by American bands such as the Ramones and the New York Dolls, the British beat boom of the sixties and Glam Rock acts like Slade and Sweet, THE LURKERS formed in West London in mid 1976 and quickly forged their own identity with their own brand of punk tunes and lyrics encompassing subjects such as social unacceptability and personal politics.

The band built up a huge loyal following around the punk heyday of 1977 and signed to Beggar's Banquet where they scored five top forty hits between 1977 and 1979 . They also appeared on Top of the Pops and many other television shows and became regulars on the popular Radio One John Peel Show.

These memorable 70s punk rockers and first ever Beggars Banquet signings are remembered as 'The British Ramones' given their style reminiscent of American punk rock.
